COLLAGES
What interested me as a commercial artist photography, typography, and the juxtaposition of shapes and colors continues to influence my work. But the driving force behind my art is a desire to communicate by sharing a special place, a moment in time, a universal emotion. My collages do this in a subtle way. They are quasi-narrative; they whisper a plot ... hint at relationships. This leaves each viewer the space to bring their own associations to the work.
The objects in my art are gathered over many decades (honestly!) of contented scrounging in urban and natural settings. I am guided by my "artist's eye" which sees beauty and value based upon the criteria of color, shape, texture, and pattern rather than Society's assigned commercial value.
Honoring these small treasures by presenting them in a compelling fashion, and encouraging others to see through my eyes, gives me the deepest satisfaction. It is that feeling that tells me when a piece is finished to the best of my ability. In those moments I wouldn't trade my life as an artist for anything in this world!
