Thoughts

"The Journey" is a quilt that began taking shape in my mind in the summer of 1998. That was when I left Connecticut, my home, my business, my marriage, my parents and my dog behind to confront life on my own terms. I had all I needed in the back of my van plus a map of the USA and a book entitled "The Best Small Art Towns in the US". I travelled all over the country that summer and even went to Alaska in hopes of finding "just the right place" to be my artist self. In September I arrived in San Antonio, TX to study surface design with, and be an intern for, Jane Dunnewold at the Southwest School of Art & Craft. I intended to stay six months, but remained in San Antonio for four years!

During those four years my journey quilt continued to develop and improve in my mind. In 2002 when I finally made "The Journey", it encompassed far more than my particular 1998 journey. It acknowledged that difficult, wonderful, frightening, transformative journey that we all make. The quotes sewn into both sides of this quilt are from well know artists, poets and authors who, quite obviously, have been there too!
